Because 3-D printers are an affordable way to make custom items, and some of these machines are able to print items out of all sorts of materials, including metal, many companies are ordering custom parts from 3-D printing vendors.
Replacement parts and tools are more and more often being ordered from 3-D printing shops.
One company, 3-D Printer Technology, has a contract with Delta Airlines to build replacement switches for Delta's flight simulating units. The Atlanta-based 3-D Printing vendor and service provider says Delta is now a routine customer. The airline previously had to wait up to 10 days to receive parts from an overseas vendor and pay double the price it pays now.
