Ganapathy says school districts should train faculty to teach computer science, and educate guidance counselors on STEM careers. Tata says the goIT program is intended to supplement educational practices – it isn't meant to intrude on what a school district is teaching, according to Ganapathy. But it is important for staff to be aware of the jobs that are out there for students, and to encourage them to go for those opportunities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2013 and 2023, more than 1.4 million jobs will be created that require computer science and programming skills. However, just 400,000 grads with computer science degrees are expected to be available to take them.
