PHI Isn’t Just For Hospitals

While the majority of incidents occurred within health care organizations, with 1,403 incidents out of 1,931, they weren’t the only industry represented, the report found. Other industries saw a significant number of incidents involving protected health information, including finance (113), retail (43), educational (51) and public (177). In fact, the report found that 90 percent of industries have experienced some sort of PHI breach.

“It definitely hammers home that protected health information isn’t just a health care issue,” Spitler said. “These data types have strong correlations to industry, but it’s not an exclusive correlation.”
