With attacks on ATMs in the past, companies have worked to step up their game, rolling out so-called next-generation ATMs that protect against skimming and shimming attacks. However, in a Black Hat presentation this week, Rapid7 security researcher Weston Hecker demonstrated “La Cara,” an automated cash out machine that can be put on current EMV and NFC ATMs to withdraw money and credit card data. In the demonstration, Hecker showed how tens of thousands of dollars could be withdrawn in this way in less than 15 minutes.
