NASCIO's Doug Robinson On The State Of State Government

What issues does IoT raise in state government?
The security issues. States have portable digital assets out there, and when you think about everything being connected, it's going to generate a lot of data. It's going to generate a lot of security concerns. I think states are going to have to deal with that next, and I would include as part of that, unmanned aerial systems or drones. These things are basically small servers in the sky, so they've got high-definition video capture, they've got sensors. They're flying around capturing all this data. There is privacy issues, security issues, policy issues. There are states every month talking about drone legislation. Part of that has to do with concerns over privacy, but there is legitimate business uses. They can be a tremendous asset to a department of agriculture that wants to do crop examinations or a department of public safety, law enforcement. There is all kinds of great applications. Anything where you need visual inspection or visual data collection that is incredibly cost effective, states are going to look at unmanned aerial systems and say, 'wow, we can launch this thing and do the work that would have taken us days and days, and we can do it in a few hours.'
