More than half of the people surveyed by IBM said they don't fully understand key elements of their organization's strategy, what they're supposed to do or what their customers want.

It will be hard for any business to thrive in today's environment if its employees don't understand the basic tenets of its business strategy and brand promise, according to the study. 

Gen X leaders, in particular, overestimate how well they spire confidence and recognize employees' accomplishments. That's especially troubling, the study said, since Gen Xers are reaching the arc of their careers and are more likely to hold leadership positions.
